Hans Op de Beeck Taps into Memory, Time, and Enigma in ‘Vanishing Point’

Hans Op de Beeck's latest exhibition, Vanishing Point, at Almine Rech, explores themes of meditation, solitude, and the enigmatic nature of memory. The monochromatic sculptures in the show are often life-size and feature a matte gray coating, inviting viewers to stand quietly near tranquil figures and framed scenes. Op de Beeck's use of scale, detail, and various objects in different settings creates a "wunderkammer" quality, as the pieces are displayed together.

Each piece appears like a muted curiosity or a component of an unusual puzzle, with the potential to change into a more vibrant reality at any moment.

The mixed-media sculpture "Cécile" (2026) and "Seascape" (2022) exemplify Op de Beeck's ability to draw viewers in with familiar elements that seem out of place or in uncanny relationships. The artist prompts contemplation on the scenes' origins and their connection to the surrounding space and the viewer. Op de Beeck does not explain his art; instead, he suggests it, as described by the gallery.

The title of the exhibition, Vanishing Point, is derived from an artistic term that refers to the point where all lines converge in a perspective drawing and elements disappear into the distance. Op de Beeck uses this concept as a metaphor for moments when the rational and concrete give way to memory, imagination, introspection, or the feeling of momentarily leaving time.
