Hampshire U-turn on Kuggeleijn signing after fan backlash

Hampshire cricket club has decided to exclude New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn from their upcoming County Championship matches following criticism from staff and supporters. The decision came after the club announced Kuggeleijn's signing for their match against Warwickshire on Tuesday, without initially informing their social media channels. Kuggeleijn, 34, faced a rape charge in 2015 which was dropped in 2017 following a re-trial due to a hung jury.

The club received backlash on social media shortly before the game, prompting Hampshire to reverse their decision and confirm that Kuggeleijn would not play any role in their final four games. The player was reportedly present at Utilita Bowl for the first day of the match on Wednesday. Hampshire Cricket stated that they value the passion of their fanbase and thanked everyone who shared their views.

The focus now is on supporting the team as they enter the crucial stage of the season with four remaining County Championship fixtures. The club encourages fans to unite behind the team during this challenging period. Kuggeleijn has played for Northern Districts in his home country for 12 years and has represented the Black Caps in three Test matches, two one-day internationals, and 18 T20s.

Currently, Hampshire is bottom of Division One in the County Championship, 16 points behind Leicestershire. The Rose and Crown have secured only two wins with the red ball this year, losing five times and drawing three matches.
