Hakeem Jeffries Struggles in Nancy Pelosi's Long Shadow

Hakeem Jeffries is facing criticism for his leadership of the House Democratic Caucus, almost three years after being handpicked by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to succeed her. Pelosi noted the contrast in how her caucus operated compared to Jeffries', stating she never contemplated members breaking ranks on procedural votes. However, the recent 210-208 procedural vote, which passed with Democratic support, drew attention to Jeffries' perceived lack of control over his caucus.

Progressive commentator Emma Vigeland argued that Jeffries does not possess the same level of leadership as Pelosi, who was known for her ability to keep her caucus united. Jeffries' tenure follows a leadership line of only three Democrats in three decades: Dick Gephardt, Pelosi, and now Jeffries. Progressive frustration has grown, especially after several Senate Democrats joined Republicans to end the government shutdown without resolving healthcare subsidies.

Critics have accused Jeffries of lacking Pelosi's discipline and willingness to take a tougher stance against President Trump. Jeffries' ties to AIPAC and close interactions with Republicans have also drawn scrutiny from the party's left flank. Despite this, some Democrats remain hesitant to fully endorse Jeffries as Speaker if the party regains control of the House.
