Gig Workers Tribunal hears first case

The Gig Workers Tribunal commenced its proceedings with the first case at the Kuching labour office in Sarawak. Suzarika Sahak, deputy president of the tribunal, presided over the hearing. The dispute centers around an e-hailing worker and the platform provider Grabcar Sdn Bhd. The ministry detailed the issues at hand, including concerns regarding the Saver Trips and Advance Booking features of the GrabCar platform, as well as cashback incentives awarded to users.

In the matter, the gig worker represented himself, while Grabcar was represented by an employee. The tribunal has scheduled additional testimony and witness examinations, with another date set for further proceedings. In addition to this case, the tribunal has received filings from other gig workers, such as those related to account deactivation or suspension, loss of income, account reactivation, and other platform-related concerns.

Furthermore, non-platform gig workers have also submitted claims concerning payments for services already completed. The Gig Workers Tribunal is established as a dedicated platform for expeditiously and fairly resolving gig worker disputes, in accordance with the provisions of the Gig Workers Act 2025.
