Ghana Water uncovers 685 illegal connections in Greater Accra, recovers GH¢6.5m

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has discovered 685 unauthorized water connections in the Greater Accra Region as part of its ongoing efforts to combat water theft and minimize revenue losses. The Managing Director and CEO, Adam Mutawakilu, disclosed this on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on September 2, discussing the topic “Is Ghana’s water quality and access under threat?”

Mr. Mutawakilu stated that the illegal connections were identified by the company's National Revenue Enhancement Team, which has been working alongside National Security since August 2025. "In August, we have uncovered 685 illegal connections within the Greater Accra Region, also known as the ATMA Region," he revealed.

According to Mutawakilu, Ghana Water billed the affected customers a total of GH¢18.5 million, recovering GH¢6.5 million so far. The remaining GH¢12 million is still being pursued, with the company planning to pursue legal action against customers who fail to settle their debts after completing the necessary procedures.

The CEO highlighted that illegal consumption accounts for approximately 78 percent of Ghana Water's non-revenue water, while physical leakages represent the remaining 22 percent. He emphasized that addressing theft would enable the company to recover significant revenue, as a substantial portion of unaccounted-for water is being consumed through unauthorized connections rather than physically lost.
