Ghana leather manufacturers demand lower tariffs, threaten demonstration over high costs

The Ghana Leather and Footwear Manufacturers Association has warned of potential street demonstrations unless the government reduces import duties on raw materials for the local industry. High tariffs, the association claims, are making it difficult for domestic manufacturers to compete against imported goods. The group has petitioned Parliament for a review of the current tariff system and stricter port enforcement.

Gilbert Ntim, the association's president, stated that the high production costs are endangering the sector, forcing some factories to close. He outlined two main demands: lower tariffs and stricter enforcement at the Tema Port for synthetic leather goods imported from China. Ntim emphasized that the current situation could undermine efforts to cultivate a sustainable local manufacturing industry, likening it to economic sabotage.

He warned that if his demands are unmet, the association may resort to street action. The impact of these issues extends beyond manufacturers, affecting artisans and young people reliant on the industry for employment. The closure of factories is contributing to job losses and hampering the development of a local leather and footwear manufacturing sector.

Ntim called for stricter enforcement of existing laws to protect local producers. He urged the government to quickly review import duties and enhance checks at Tema Port, particularly on synthetic leather products, to reduce costs, protect jobs, and ensure the industry's survival and growth.
