GFA reappoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially reappointed Carlos Queiroz as the head coach of the Black Stars, putting an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future. In a statement released on September 2, 2026, the GFA confirmed they had reached an agreement with Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach for the next phase of the team's program.

Queiroz's earlier contract, which was short-term and covered Ghana's participation in the 2026 World Cup, had come to an end after the tournament. However, following talks between the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, both parties agreed on a fresh mandate. This new phase for Queiroz begins with the upcoming international window, as Ghana gears up to open their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers away to Côte d'Ivoire on September 24.

The GFA cited Queiroz's extensive international experience, technical expertise, and familiarity with the Black Stars as key factors in their decision to retain him. This move follows calls from several quarters, including President John Mahama and captain Jordan Ayew, for continuity after Ghana's promising run to the World Cup's last-16.

While the announcement did not disclose the length or financial details of the new deal, some reports suggest it is an interim arrangement focused on the September-October window and the AFCON qualifying campaign. It is also noted that outstanding payments owed to Queiroz and his support staff for the World Cup period have been settled, paving the way for this agreement.
