Full house for 'Dr Death': AfriForum event on Basson's apartheid-era project sells out

AfriForum's theatre event featuring Dr Wouter Basson, the controversial former apartheid-era military doctor, has sold out tickets ahead of Friday's gathering. Basson, who led Project Coast, a covert programme while serving in the South African Defence Force (SADF) from 1980 to 1995, is set to share his personal account. Project Coast, once described as a defensive research initiative, later investigations revealed explored offensive chemical and biological weapons, including toxic substances, poisons, and covert assassination methods.

Basson, now a cardiologist in Cape Town, faced 67 criminal charges, but was acquitted in 2005. However, he continues to face complaints with the Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) regarding alleged unprofessional conduct linked to his role in Project Coast. In 2013, he was found guilty of unprofessional conduct, but the sentencing proceedings were halted due to legal issues.

The HPCSA disciplinary process remains active, and Basson has since applied for leave to appeal, a request that was also denied. Despite the ongoing legal battles, Basson's role in Project Coast has made him one of South Africa's most contentious public figures. The event, held at Greenlyn Village Centre in Menlo Park, Pretoria, will take place on Friday evening, with tickets priced at R180.
