El turismo y sus límites

Spain's tourism sector has shattered records once again in July, with 11.5 million foreign travelers arriving, surpassing the previous peak of 11.2 million in August 2025. The associated spending exceeded 18 billion, marking another new record. From January to July of this year, Spain welcomed over 58 million tourists, who spent more than 82 billion.

These figures speak volumes about the sector's growth, a trend that has been evident for over a decade, with the exception of pandemic years. The industry believes that 2026 will see surpass 100 million tourists, once considered an unreachable milestone.

Spanish tourism has transformed this goal into a reality through various positive measures. Labor reforms have led to an improved quality of employment in the sector, and the distribution of travelers throughout the year shows progress towards better balance. Most importantly, spending has increased significantly beyond just the number of arrivals, indicating that tourism growth is not solely driven by volume.

However, there are challenges to consider. Despite the progress, more work remains to be done, particularly in terms of de-seasonalization. While the seasonality effect has not impeded the overall growth, it remains significant, accounting for about a third of the total annual visitors. Additionally, the rising spending is taking place in an inflationary context, necessitating careful consideration of prices to ensure the sustainability of Spain's tourism miracle, which relies heavily on competitive pricing.

It is now time to celebrate the achievements but also to emphasize the responsibility of both administrations and the sector to preserve the dynamic growth. This includes acknowledging the impact of tourism on social and environmental limits, and striving for sustainability to avoid the most harmful effects of saturation.
