Ebola death toll passes 3,000 in DR Congo: official data

On Tuesday, schools in eastern Congo resumed classes in the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak, despite concerns from parents and teachers. The resumption of classes comes amidst a rapidly spreading disease outbreak that has claimed 2,950 lives and infected 6,100 people since mid-May. The union representing teachers in Ituri province had called for a delay in restarting classes, but the government proceeded as planned.

Some schools in the region, particularly those owned by the government, reported low attendance. The government has not commented on measures to prevent transmission in classrooms. A parent in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, stated that the school restart was unexpected and her child continues to stay at home. She does not see any increase in preventive measures.

Education officials are equipping schools with non-contact infrared thermometers, hand sanitizers, and hand-washing basins. They are also raising student awareness about hygiene protocols, including regular handwashing and using hand sanitizer. Teachers in a private school in Bunia noted that major challenges remain, as many schools lack access to clean water and funding is below target.

There are also significant logistical challenges, especially in remote areas where the delivery of equipment and learning materials may be delayed. Save the Children's director for Congo, Greg Ramm, highlighted these issues.
