East of Eden trailer: Florence Pugh leads Netflixs sprawling John Steinbeck adaptation

Florence Pugh takes on the role of Cathy Ames, one of literature's most formidable antagonists, in Netflix's upcoming limited series East of Eden. This adaptation of John Steinbeck's renowned novel is penned and produced by Zoe Kazan, known for Ruby Sparks and The Big Sick. Notably, her grandfather Elia Kazan helmed the 1955 film version, starring James Dean, though Kazan's adaptation differs by delving deeper into Steinbeck's intricate multigenerational narrative and placing a heavy emphasis on Cathy.

Pugh's portrayal of Cathy, described as pure evil and a creature with a malformed soul, serves as the series' primary antagonist. Married to Adam Trask, portrayed by Christopher Abbott, Cathy and her husband establish themselves in the Salinas Valley, where they bear twins Cal, played by Joseph Zada, and Aron, portrayed by Joe Anders. The ensuing drama unfolds as a vast, multi-generational retelling of the Cain and Abel tale from Genesis.

The first full-length trailer of East of Eden introduces the key characters across generations, including Adam Trask, his half-brother Charles, played by Mike Faist, Trask's family servant Lee, portrayed by Hoon Lee, and Cal and Aron. Central to the story is Pugh's formidable depiction of Cathy Ames. Echoing the Academy Award-winning performance of Jo Van Fleet in the 1955 film adaptation, Pugh's portrayal of Cathy may yield similar critical acclaim. East of Eden is set to premiere on Netflix on October 1.
