The ability to make independent, autonomous decisions about your digital infrastructure and data, whether you're an individual, a company, or a nation. It means not being at the mercy of foreign governments or a few dominant tech companies.

But the current situation is the exact opposite. Much of Europe's digital value creation happens on platforms subject to US law. The core problem lies at the intersection of the European General Data Protection Regulation (DSGVO) and US laws such as the CLOUD Act. While the DSGVO enshrines the protection of personal data as a fundamental right, the CLOUD Act allows US authorities to access data from US companies, no matter where it's stored worldwide. The Frankfurt data center becomes as irrelevant as ever.

There's an increasing number of cloud providers with European roots that don't fall under the CLOUD Act. Providers like OVHcloud (France), Hetzner (Germany), Scaleway (France), or IONOS (Germany) offer a broad range of IaaS and PaaS services, operating their data centers in Europe and subject only to European law. Initiatives like Gaia-X also aim to create a federated, sovereign European data infrastructure, though implementation is still a work in progress.

The second strategy is owning your private cloud (self-hosting). For maximum control, there's no substitute for your own or self-managed infrastructure. This doesn't mean you have to house servers in a basement.
