Confirmed: Carlos Queiroz stays on as Black Stars coach ahead of AFCON qualifiers

The Ghana Football Association has officially confirmed that Carlos Queiroz will continue as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of their upcoming AFCON qualifiers. The announcement comes after weeks of speculation surrounding the Portuguese veteran's future following the expiration of his initial four-month contract last month.

Queiroz, 73, has an impressive coaching resume, having managed Egypt, Colombia, and Iran in the past. He was appointed as Ghana's coach in April 2023, tasked with leading the team into the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under Queiroz's guidance, the Black Stars made history by reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Ghana's campaign began with a 1-0 win against Panama and a goalless draw against England, before a 2-1 loss to Croatia ultimately secured their progression. Despite setbacks, including a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32, the GFA announced on Wednesday that an agreement had been reached with Queiroz following talks involving the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

The GFA stated that Queiroz's extensive international experience, technical expertise, and knowledge of the Black Stars make him an ideal candidate to guide the team into its next phase. The next assignment for Queiroz will be Ghana's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which begins with a match against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, followed by a home game against The Gambia three days later at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana aims to return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing out on qualification for the 2022 tournament in Morocco.
