Cassandra Wilson, the two-time Grammy Award-winning jazz singer, has died

Cassandra Wilson, a Grammy Award-winning jazz singer, songwriter and producer, has passed away at the age of 70. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Wilson's powerful voice transcended traditional jazz, blending blues, folk, pop, R&B, country and more. Dubbed "America's best singer" by Time magazine in 2001, she received four Grammy nominations and two wins for best jazz vocal album.

Her unique contralto voice and soulful sound were deeply rooted in her Mississippi heritage. Wilson's eulogist, Jon Batiste, noted her ability to connect generations through music. She died peacefully at home in Jackson, surrounded by family and friends.
