Bring in tech, cut human role: Ram Temple Trust explores new counting process for donations

The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, following alleged donation theft, is considering a technological approach to counting cash donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. This comes after the Trust's meeting where proposals from an IIT and two banks were discussed. The Trust aims to streamline the counting process and enhance its financial systems.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), set up by the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate the theft, found significant lapses leading to the crime. Since the theft allegations surfaced in June, several security measures were put in place. So far, eight individuals have been arrested, including six counting agents, a former general secretary's driver, and a retired bank employee.

The Trust welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to involve an independent forensic auditor in the SIT probe, emphasizing the need for an impartial and transparent investigation. During the 2025-26 financial year, the Ram Temple generated Rs 237 crore in income and had Rs 99 crore in expenditures. It also spent Rs 425 crore on construction and other works. As of March 31, 2026, the Trust held Rs 1,882 crore in total available funds.
