Bolt says ‘we are staying’ as Uber pulls plug on ride-hailing operations

Uber, the ride-hailing company, has announced the closure of its operations in Nigeria as of September 2, 2026. The company, which entered the Nigerian market in 2014, made the decision after a thorough review of its business. Uber expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them by users, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the shutdown.

The ride-hailing platform has also unveiled plans to eliminate approximately 3,300 positions, primarily in management and coordination roles, as part of a broader organizational overhaul. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the need to simplify team structures, streamline operations, and focus on the company's future growth. The restructuring will result in a 10% reduction in Uber's workforce.

Khosrowshahi emphasized that these changes are not a reflection of individual employees' contributions but are necessary to make Uber simpler, faster, and more focused on future investments. The company aims to reinvest the savings generated by the restructuring into growth and innovation. The layoffs mark the latest round of job cuts for Uber, following earlier eliminations in customer service and HR roles.
