An Entire Forested Island Appeared and Disappeared So Inexplicably That Officials Thought It Was AI

In northern British Columbia, a forested island emerged unexpectedly from a lake, leaving officials baffled as they initially suspected the footage showing the island to be AI-generated, according to the New York Times. However, satellite imagery confirmed that the island, covering nearly two-and-a-half acres, was indeed real. Bob Gammer, a spokesperson for BC Hydro, the government-owned utility operating the reservoir, expressed astonishment, stating, "This is a first for us, for this reservoir."

Gammer further explained that the newly discovered island was larger than a Canadian football field, comparable to two NFL fields.

Located about 60 miles west of the reservoir's WAC Bennett dam, BC Hydro speculates that the island is a chunk of the reservoir that broke off from a sheltered shoreline due to the highest water levels in 14 years. As years passed, Gammer suggested that logs and woody debris could have accumulated in this area, forming a makeshift raft on which trees could grow and even embark on naval expeditions.

Gammer noted, "We could easily see that a mass of woody debris with live vegetation on top of it rises up, floats and breaks free from the shoreline."

Just as investigators began to accept the existence of the island, it vanished around August 5, only to reappear again on August 15, now roughly 20 miles northwest of its initial location. The island seemed to temporarily drift to shore, merging with the surroundings before drifting back into the water.
