Africa Food Systems Forum: John Dumelo urges Ghanaian youth to embrace agriculture

Ghana's Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has called on young people in Ghana to embrace agriculture and food sector business, emphasizing the sector's potential for employment and wealth creation. Dumelo noted that the country's farming population is aging, with many young people hesitant to enter the field despite the increasing opportunities.

He expressed optimism about the growing engagement of youth in farming and value addition, stating, "If you look at Ghana, the farming age is in the 50s. The young ones are shying away. But the narrative is changing. More youth are getting into farming and value addition."

Dumelo urged young people not to view farming as their only path to benefit from the food systems sector, emphasizing that opportunities exist across the entire value chain. He advised them to begin small and build practical experience as their businesses grow. Recognizing concerns about access to land and finance, Dumelo encouraged young entrepreneurs to learn from experience and maintain accurate records of their businesses to facilitate support from potential investors and stakeholders.

During a meeting with Ghanaian agribusiness entrepreneurs and officials at the Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Rwanda, Dumelo highlighted the government's priorities in the agricultural sector, focusing on poultry production, value addition, and reducing food costs. He outlined plans to improve food availability and affordability over the next four years.
