Africa Food Systems Forum: John Dumelo urges Ghanaian youth to embrace agriculture

Ghana's Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has called on more young people to join the agriculture and food sector, emphasizing the industry's potential for job creation and wealth generation. He noted that Ghana's farming population is aging, with many young people hesitant to enter the sector despite its growing opportunities.

During the Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) in Rwanda, Dumelo highlighted that while some youth may not become farmers, they can still contribute to the food value chain as agripreneurs. He acknowledged challenges such as access to land and finance but encouraged young entrepreneurs to start small and gain hands-on experience. Proper record-keeping was also advised to facilitate support from investors and stakeholders.

Reactions from young agribusiness leaders included calls for fair prices for farmers and policies to regulate intermediary profits. Sadat Abdul Wahab, founder of Seedvance, emphasized the need for fair pricing and suggested government intervention to ensure farmers receive fixed prices. Adom Yaa Afrakoma Amponsem of the World Food Forum Ghana chapter expressed optimism about the future of young people in agriculture, citing government programs and the Deputy Minister's openness to support.
