Zambia president inaugurated for second term after disputed vote and opposition arrests

Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema marked his second term inauguration on Tuesday, following a contentious election marred by opposition arrests and the suspension of the nation's courts to hear legal challenges to the results. Hichilema, who took the oath at a ceremony held at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, was declared the winner on August 18 with approximately 60% of the presidential votes, according to the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

The southern African nation has maintained peaceful elections since transitioning to multiparty democracy in 1991. His principal rival, opposition leader Brian Mundubile, secured about 38% of the vote. Mundubile subsequently disputed the election outcomes, alleging widespread irregularities. The inauguration ceremony was attended by several African dignitaries, including Kenya's President William Ruto, Botswana's President Duma Boko, and Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In his address to the supportive crowd, Hichilema acknowledged the votes for the opposition as having been heard through the democratic process. He expressed gratitude to those who chose other candidates or parties, saying, "We receive your support with humility and with a clear understanding of the responsibility it places upon our shoulders. To those who chose other candidates or other parties, we say with equal sincerity, we have heard you."

The election has been clouded by reports of Mundubile and his running mate, Makebu Zulu, being detained at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison in central Zambia. Local media outlets have been unable to verify the accuracy of these claims.
