Young man escapes lynching in Calabar over suspected theft

In Calabar, a young man, identified as Chukwuebuka, narrowly escaped a potentially fatal lynching on Tuesday morning after police intervention. The incident transpired around Harbour Junction, where Chukwuebuka was accused of stealing mobile phones. According to eyewitnesses, a 56-year-old man named Azubuike Micheal incited a mob to assault Chukwuebuka, leaving him in a state of unconsciousness.

Eyewitnesses reported that the mob was on the verge of lynching the suspect when a team of policemen arrived to rescue him. The Police Public Relations Officer of the state police command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed the incident, stating that a distress call received in the morning prompted the Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, to deploy a rescue team.

Upon arrival at the scene, the police patrol team found Chukwuebuka under attack by the mob. They immediately intervened, rescuing the young man and transporting him to an undisclosed clinic for treatment of his multiple injuries. Azubuike Micheal, the instigator of the mob, was subsequently arrested by the police. The state Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, emphasized the importance of adhering to due process and cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, reiterating that suspected offenders should be handed over to the police for investigation.
