Xi's visit to Egypt marks Chinese interest in Middle East, Egypt's push to keep growing - analysis

Chinese President Xi Jinping embarked on a three-day visit to Egypt, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. This visit highlights China's growing interest in the Middle East and Egypt's role as a key player in the region. Egypt's strategic importance stems from its vast population, the Suez Canal, and its position at the crossroads of the Middle East and North Africa. The visit comes amid China's efforts to expand its influence in the Middle East, particularly through economic blocs like BRICS and SCO. China is careful in its approach, learning from past experiences, such as the failed 25-year deal with Iran. Egypt is one of China's most important economic partners, with bilateral trade valued at approximately $19.52 billion in 2025. Additionally, Egyptian President Sisi has made eight trips to China, and bilateral trade is believed to exceed $10 billion, focusing on various sectors such as construction, textiles, electronics, energy, transport, and industrial manufacturing.
