Who is Gurmeet Singh? Indian-origin man stripped of US citizenship over rape

Gurmeet Singh, an Indian-born taxi driver, had his US citizenship stripped after being convicted of raping a passenger at knifepoint in 2011. According to the Department of Justice, Singh concealed the crime during his naturalization process, obtaining citizenship by hiding the horrific acts. US Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that American citizenship is not a shield for criminals and that the ruling demonstrates the department's commitment to pursuing denaturalization cases swiftly.

Singh entered the US on a temporary visa in February 1992 and stayed without authorization for several years before gaining permanent residency in June 2000. In May 2011, weeks before applying for citizenship, he was convicted of first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping. His citizenship was revoked on August 26 when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
