On Monday, the Delhi Police approached the Supreme Court, requesting the quashing of FIRs against students involved in protests over the NEET-UG question paper leak, citing "public and national interest." The court agreed to hear the plea on Tuesday. The National Federation of Students (NFS), a party involved in the protests, has called for a march in Delhi on September 5, accusing the Centre of failing to fulfill its promises, including dropping the cases against the protesters.

The Supreme Court on Monday also refrained from issuing any order on a plea against the NFS's proposed protest. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that as of now, there is no reason to doubt that everyone will act responsibly and peacefully during the protest. In its plea, the Delhi Police mentioned that due to the Centre's decision on July 25 to drop the cases, it no longer wishes to pursue or investigate the FIRs registered between July 20th and 25th, 2026.

If any other FIR related to the incidents mentioned in the application is found later, the State shall not oppose seeking relief from the Court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that the application would be filed, and urged the court to hear it on Tuesday. The court has also set up a high-powered enquiry committee to probe alleged police excesses against protesters, and has sought a list of FIRs it could quash under Article 142.

Responding to the CJI's inquiry about the application, Mehta stated that it was related to the protest and invoked Article 142. On August 18, the last date of hearing, the bench had asked for a list of FIRs that could be quashed under Article 142. Mehta informed the court that barring 2,873 people booked in grave cases, the cases against the others could be quashed.

Adv. Syed Rizwan Ahmed, representing a petitioner against the NFS's proposed protest, mentioned that the protest was announced on social media and not proposed. He warned that the NFS is seeking a confrontation with the police ahead of the BRICS summit, which is set to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. The CJI emphasized that it is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order, and both sides must respect and follow the law of the land.
