'We're not Superman': Sarawak cops told to wear masks amid hazes

KUCHING, Sarawak: Police commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah addressed his officers, reminding them that wearing masks is not an option for superheroes, but a necessity during haze conditions. He urged all policemen, including those in traffic teams, mobile patrols, and the General Operations Force, to adhere to Health Ministry standard operating procedures to safeguard their health. Prolonged exposure to polluted air can negatively impact the respiratory system and eyes, he cautioned.

Addressing the handover ceremony for the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief post, Zainal highlighted the increasing number of reports on eye and respiratory health issues among the public due to haze conditions since early last month. He emphasized that this applies to the police force as well, stating, "We are not Superman. We also need to take care of our health while ensuring public safety."

For personnel with pre-existing medical conditions like asthma, extra precautions are necessary. All officers performing outdoor duties must follow established SOPs. The police management is procuring additional N95 face masks, utilizing existing inventory from the Covid-19 pandemic if necessary. Zainal expressed hope that the haze situation would improve soon, especially with anticipated rainfall to reduce air pollution.
