Opposition mulls single term

Six opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to collaborate and form a unified front ahead of the 2027 general elections. The parties, which include the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party, and Social Democratic Party, have committed to a process of cooperation and presented a roadmap for producing a consensus presidential candidate.

This framework includes a single-term transition charter, aiming to transition power without the incumbent ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) winning more than one presidential term. Key party leaders from the six parties attended the G100 First Summit of Party Leaders and Stakeholders in Abuja, where they discussed the need for a structured negotiation process and the establishment of working groups to draft key documents.

These documents will include a "Roadmap to a Common Presidential Candidate," a "National Covenant for Democratic Renewal," a "Single-Term Transition Charter," and a "National Reform Programme and Framework for Opposition Unity." The parties also formed three standing coalition organs: the Central Leadership Committee, Publicity and Communication Committee, and Legal Committee, to coordinate their proposed cooperation.

The main objective of this proposed coalition is to create a credible alternative government in 2027 and provide Nigerians with a platform for defeating the ruling APC.
