We thought we'd be empty nesters at 50. Instead, 3 of our adult kids are living at home, and one's moving back in soon.

Three of our children are currently living at home, with a fourth planning to return after graduation. Kevin Payne explained, "We always thought we'd be empty nesters at 50, but now all four of our kids are living with us or plan to do so temporarily." The family has had to adjust their own plans, but they've also made progress in other areas.

A decade ago, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their oldest daughter recently completed her graduate coursework and began fieldwork, while their youngest son graduated from high school this spring. For the first time, all four of their children, aged 18 to 23, were either in college or preparing to start their higher education journeys.

Barb and Kevin Payne had expected their once bustling household to become quieter with their kids moving out. However, the family's circumstances have kept three of their children at home, with the oldest son planning to return after graduation. Kevin shared, "The empty nest we expected at 50 suddenly looks much further away." Each of their kids has different reasons for living at home.

Kevin's youngest son chose a nearby college and plans to commute, as his career requires a doctorate. Their 21-year-old daughter is close to earning an associate degree and may pursue a bachelor's degree. Their 23-year-old daughter, an occupational-therapy student, moved home for in-person classes and fieldwork, helping her access Cleveland's top hospitals and healthcare systems.

The oldest son, who doesn't live at home, attends school out of state and plans to pursue counseling, which requires an advanced degree. If he decides to attend graduate school locally or online, all six of them will be living together again.
