Ukraine racing to develop new interceptors as Russian drones and missiles ravage the country

Ukraine is racing to develop new interceptors to counter a surge in Russian jet-powered drones that have been relentlessly attacking the country in recent months. These drones, known as the Geran-4 and Geran-5, are faster and more numerous than previous versions, making them harder to intercept. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that nearly 1,500 drones were fired at Ukraine over four days, with more than half being jet-powered.

The intense drone attacks have caused widespread damage across Ukraine, including targets such as warehouses, gas stations, postal facilities, and factories. The Kremlin aims to exhaust Ukrainian air defenses and disrupt civilians' morale by attacking food warehouses, stores, and energy infrastructure. To counter this threat, Ukraine is in a race against time to develop and deploy effective interceptors.

While the country's combat aircraft currently provide some protection, the limited resources of Ukraine's small air force make this approach costly. Four companies are developing interceptor drones, with field trials underway to scale up production for thousands of units. One Ukrainian-made interceptor, named Sting, has reportedly taken down two jet-powered drones.

Ukrainian companies are also working on updates to their interceptors, such as the LITAVR+ with speeds exceeding 400 km/h. Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is visiting the United States to explore potential partnerships with defense technology companies and new ventures, including robotics for personnel removal in dangerous front-line sectors and low-cost AI-guided missiles. The ongoing technological race aims to gain a strategic advantage in the conflict.
