UK court jails sleep-deprived Nigerian taxi driver for fatal crash

A Nigerian taxi driver, Kolawole Erunkulu, has been sentenced to six years in prison for causing the death of Philip Dray in a fatal crash. Erunkulu, 45, fell asleep at the wheel after driving for 53 hours over three days, with his last break lasting only seven hours. The collision occurred on August 17, 2025, when Erunkulu's Audi drifted off the road and struck Dray in a lay-by.

Footage from inside Erunkulu's vehicle showed him experiencing a microsleep just before the crash. Erunkulu pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving in June 2026 and was also banned from driving for eight years. He must also undergo an extended driving test if he wishes to obtain a new license. Her Honour Judge Lees noted that Erunkulu had driven despite knowing his level of fatigue and could have stopped, but he continued to operate the vehicle.

The case emphasizes the dangers of driving while fatigued, which can severely impair a driver's ability to react safely. Dray's family described him as an amazing partner and a man who lived quietly but cared deeply about others.
