Uganda: Tooro Kingdom At Crossroads Over Succession

Fort Portal, Uganda — The Tooro Kingdom finds itself at a crucial juncture as questions arise concerning the selection of the next monarch following the recent demise of King Oyo Kabamab Iguru Rukiidi IV. The king's passing in the United States while receiving medical care has led to uncertainty over his successor, with conflicting reports regarding the existence of a designated heir.

Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomire announced that the king's son might be the rightful heir, supported by President Yoweri Museveni's confirmation of the queen mother's statement regarding the child's existence. However, this claim has been met with skepticism by certain royal figures. Charles Kamurasi, the Omusunga or head of the Tooro Royal Clan, expressed doubts about the son's claim, stating he was unaware of the existence of such an heir and questioned its legitimacy.

Kamurasi emphasized that if no clear successor emerges, the tradition would dictate that the throne pass to the lineage Rukidi III. To manage the succession, a committee comprising 21 elders from the Babiito clan has been formed, led by Musuga Charles Kamurasi and including prominent figures such as Dr. Isaac Mayombo and Dr. Kagoro Kaijamurubi.

The committee is responsible for overseeing the traditional succession process and ensuring stability within the kingdom. Omukuma security officer Kasaija Ernest Kusemerera noted that while awaiting confirmation, the focus remains on adhering to traditional protocols to maintain stability in the Tooro monarchy. According to ritualist David Baguma, if the king's son is indeed legitimate, his maternal grandfather must first present him to the Babiito clan elders, followed by traditional rituals to prepare the heir for his role.

Baguma stressed the importance of maintaining calm during this uncertain period, emphasizing that the Tooro Kingdom remains a well-established institution with clear protocols to determine the next ruler, regardless of the outcome.
