Traders demand urgent review of excessive port charges

The Traders Advocacy Group (TAGG) has urged the Ghanaian government to immediately review the excessive port charges imposed on traders and importers. In a press release on September 1, 2026, TAGG alleged that the charges have been unjustifiable and continue to rise, with an administrative charge increasing from GH¢550 to GH¢720 following discussions between the Ghana Shippers Authority and stakeholders.

TAGG expressed concern over these charges, stating that they are excessive and unfair, and that they hinder the reduction of business costs in Ghana. They emphasized that traders cannot continue to absorb these additional costs without passing them on to consumers in the form of higher prices for imported goods. TAGG rejected the argument that reducing these charges could lead to job losses at shipping companies, asserting that the welfare of workers should not justify unjustified costs.

The group called on President John Dramani Mahama and his government to intervene and ensure the immediate review of port charges, urging the Ministry of Transport to enforce existing laws and regulations. They also criticized shipping lines for not complying with Ghanaian laws and lawful directives, and advocated for a 50 percent reduction in import duties on commercial vehicles to encourage investment and increase the availability of vehicles for public transport.
