Tony Romo pleads no contest to charge of operating while intoxicated and issues statement of apology

Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS NFL analyst, has pleaded no contest to a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Romo was arrested on July 23 in Wisconsin after a traffic stop on Interstate 43. He lost his driver's license for six months and was ordered to undergo an alcohol assessment program. An interlock device must be installed on any vehicle he owns or operates for at least a year following his license reinstatement.

In an Instagram post, Romo apologized for his actions, stating that his constant pain from multiple back surgeries had led him to become dependent on pain medication, which in turn caused his over-reliance on alcohol. He emphasized that these were his mistakes and that he takes full responsibility for them. Romo is currently undergoing treatment with a team of doctors to address his health and make necessary changes.

He thanked his family, friends, and the NFL community for their support. CBS Sports has placed Romo on leave from his role as lead NFL analyst, and they do not yet have a timeline for his return. In Romo's absence, analyst JJ Watt will join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on CBS Sports' lead NFL team.
