Three reported dead, several injured after violent attack on New Winneba residents

Three individuals have reportedly lost their lives and approximately fifteen others sustained injuries after a violent mob attack in New Winneba Township, located in the Effutu North District of the Central Region. The incident took place on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a group of around 300 people reportedly descended upon the area, targeting residents, shops, and other properties belonging to natives of the region.

The attackers, allegedly originating from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, reportedly wielded guns, stones, cutlasses, and sticks during the violent confrontation. Police reports indicate that the motive for the attack remains unknown, and investigators are currently working to uncover the circumstances that led to the violence.

Consequently, personnel from the Central Regional Police Command, Winneba Divisional Headquarters, and Agona Swedru District Patrols have been deployed to restore order and prevent further escalation. Additionally, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed reinforcement to the area, with two armoured vehicles added to the security operations in the affected communities.
