Three dead, 15 injured in violent clashes at New Winneba

On Tuesday, September 1, violent clashes erupted at New Winneba in the Central Region, resulting in three deaths and approximately fifteen injuries. The Ghana Police Service stated that among the injured is a police officer, with all victims receiving medical attention at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. The unrest commenced around 10:40 a.m. when an estimated 300 armed individuals - wielding guns, stones, cutlasses, and sticks - reportedly stormed the New Winneba Township.

These assailants, believed to originate from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, allegedly targeted residents and caused damage to local businesses and properties. Subsequently, police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were dispatched to quell the violence and restore order.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also ordered additional security forces from the National Police Headquarters to bolster the situation, including two armored vehicles for further protection. As of now, the Police Service asserts that the tense situation remains under control, and security forces are maintaining the peace to avert further disturbances.

However, the exact cause of the clashes and the circumstances leading to the fatalities are still under investigation, with further updates expected as the inquiry progresses.
