There’s no fixed price for kidney — Surgeon

Dr. Torngee Malu, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, has addressed the question of kidney donation prices amid investigations into alleged kidney harvesting and human trafficking in Nigeria. Dr. Malu emphasized that there is no fixed monetary value for a human kidney and that organ donation should not be viewed as a sale. He stated that the law provides for reimbursement or compensation, but does not prescribe a fixed price for an organ.

The surgeon argued that kidney disease affects people across income groups and that access to transplantation should be prioritized over assigning a monetary value to donated organs. Dr. Malu clarified that kidney transplantation is a highly specialized procedure requiring specialized medical conditions and noted that it should not be confused with illegal organ trafficking.
