Terrorist attacks increase but fatalities decline during August: PICSS

In August, the number of terrorist attacks rose significantly, with 199 incidents compared to 144 in July, marking a 38 percent increase. Despite the rise in attacks, fatalities and injuries from these assaults decreased compared to July, according to a report by Islamabad-based think tank, Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).

In August, 199 attacks resulted in 158 deaths and 181 injuries, while July saw 144 attacks leading to 268 deaths and 216 injuries. Consequently, deaths from terrorist attacks dropped by 41 percent, and injuries declined by 16 percent. Security forces' ongoing counter-terrorism operations during August led to 211 deaths, including 203 terrorists, 21 injuries, and 26 arrests of suspected terrorists.

During the month, three suicide attacks took place, including two vehicle-borne suicide attacks, a significant decrease from July's eight suicide attacks, including five vehicle-borne attacks. Kidnapping incidents fell by 36 percent, dropping from 66 in July to 42 in August. The most common tactic used in the attacks was tactical assaults, with 47 incidents, followed by target killings (46) and IED attacks (36).

Tactical assaults caused 40 deaths and 44 injuries, while target killings resulted in 50 deaths and 23 injuries, and IED attacks caused 15 deaths and 50 injuries. Balochistan experienced the most severe security situation, with a 7 percent increase in attacks from 83 in July to 89 in August. However, fatalities and injuries from these attacks declined from 162 and 86 in July to 76 and 47 in August, respectively.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, excluding the merged districts, attacks increased by 50 percent from 36 in July to 54 in August. Deaths from these attacks dropped from 69 to 44, and injuries decreased from 96 to 70. In the merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, attacks rose by 126 percent from 23 in July to 52. Deaths from attacks slightly declined from 36 to 34, while injuries rose from 33 to 59.

Punjab recorded two terrorist attacks in August, resulting in three deaths and five injuries. Security forces conducted two operations in the province and arrested five suspected terrorists. Sindh also reported two attacks in August, resulting in one death, with two operations and the arrest of two suspected terrorists. Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan saw no terrorist activities during August.
