Tanker drivers demand audit and elections, cite poor representation and toll increase

Tanker drivers across Ghana have expressed discontent with their current union executives, citing issues of poor representation, lack of transparency, and inadequate resolution of welfare concerns. Speaking to the media in Tema, some of these drivers have urged stakeholders, especially the mother union, to conduct an audit and hold elections before the end of their current four-year mandate.

They have highlighted poor working conditions, unfair treatment at loading depots, and the recent increase in tolls from GH¢10 to GH¢20 at loading points, without clear communication on the purpose of this hike.

The drivers complain that the union has failed to hold elections for the past 1.5 years, raising concerns over accountability and governance. One driver stated, "Things are going on that we are not happy about, so we want the current union to step aside so we have new ones. There is no accountability and no elections. It has elapsed for about one and a half years now."

They also noted that the union's constitution mandates elections every four years, and the absence of these elections has led to dissatisfaction among the members.

However, George Nyaunu, the Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union, dismissed these allegations. He expressed surprise at the complaints and affirmed the union's openness to scrutiny. Nyaunu emphasized that the union has presented audited accounts from 2021 to 2024, which have been accepted by the members.

He also revealed that an election committee has been formed to oversee the upcoming elections. Nyaunu clarified that he is not part of this committee, as he serves as the union chairman. Despite the drivers' grievances, Nyaunu reiterated the union's willingness to address member concerns and streamline its operations.
