STAT+: NIH proposal to cap research grants draws mixed reception, agency says

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has proposed a controversial plan to cap the number of research grants that individual scientists can hold simultaneously, sparking a range of reactions from the scientific community. After releasing the anonymized 3,307 responses to its feedback call, the NIH shared that opinions on the matter were far from unanimous. A significant portion, 40%, of the respondents expressed opposition to the proposal, while 27% of the respondents backed the idea of instituting a cap. The remaining 32% remained neutral or mixed in their sentiments.

The NIH expressed optimism that a grant cap could lead to a more equitable distribution of research funds, bolstering stewardship, workforce sustainability, and the overarching goals of the NIH Unified Funding Strategy. However, even supporters of the concept cautioned that a straightforward cap on the number of grants could prove overly simplistic and potentially disruptive to the research landscape during a period marked by significant upheaval.
