Starlink spearheads satellite internet boom but other players are set to launch

Elon Musk's Starlink is leading the satellite internet revolution, providing internet services in the UAE, even though it has stopped accepting new customers due to capacity constraints. Starlink recently launched a decade-long license from UAE regulators, competing with fiber internet services from du and e&. Experts predict satellite internet could take up to 15% of the overall market in 15 years, with a global market value expected to reach $35.7 billion by 2033.

Starlink currently boasts 12 million global customers, doubling its subscriber base from the previous year. Other satellite internet providers, including Amazon's Leo service and Blue Origin's TeraWave network, are also set to enter the market, targeting both individual consumers and large corporations. Starlink's prices range from Dh300 to Dh397 per month, depending on the speed level.

Despite challenges such as high initial deployment costs, signal delays, and weather-related performance variations, the satellite internet market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Starlink is addressing capacity restrictions by launching new Version 3 satellites, which have larger antennae and can resolve some of the issues.

However, for most consumers already with fiber internet, switching to satellite internet may not offer significant benefits, especially in areas already served by high-speed fiber networks.
