Schumer to introduce bill targeting Trump’s latest tariffs on Canada

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to introduce a bill aimed at halting U.S. President Donald Trump's recent tariffs, as Democrats intensify their focus on affordability issues ahead of the midterm elections. The legislation, backed by the New York Democrat, seeks to curb the new tariffs imposed on Canadian goods and separate duties claimed to be connected to forced labor in supply chains.

Schumer argues that the bill is largely symbolic and unlikely to pass a Republican-controlled Congress or withstand a presidential veto from Trump. In a recent statement, Schumer criticized Republicans for not confronting Trump while Americans are demanding relief from rising costs of living. In July, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on various Canadian goods, including hockey sticks, cement, and honey, following a breakdown in trade negotiations between the two countries. Canada is expected to retaliate with its own set of duties next week.
