Schumer to introduce bill targeting Trump’s latest tariffs on Canada

Senator Chuck Schumer plans to introduce a bill aimed at halting U.S. President Donald Trump's most recent tariffs on Canada, as Democrats intensify their focus on affordability issues prior to the midterm elections.

The legislation seeks to curb the new tariffs imposed on Canadian goods and the additional duties claimed by the Trump administration, which are allegedly connected to forced labor in supply chains. The bill, supported by the New York Democrat, is primarily symbolic and faces a low probability of passing through a Republican-controlled Congress or defying Trump's potential veto.

Schumer expressed frustration in a press release, stating that Republicans are not standing up to Trump while Americans are urgently seeking relief from the cost-of-living crisis. Earlier this month, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on numerous products, including hockey sticks, cement, and honey, following the breakdown of trade negotiations between the two countries. Canada is set to retaliate with its own set of duties the following week.
