Russia cannot change Ukraine’s borders after 1,651 days of war — UK

The UK has warned the United Nations General Assembly that Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territories and ongoing military actions do not alter Ukraine's sovereignty or borders. Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh, speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, highlighted that 1,651 days have passed since Russia's invasion began and twelve years since the annexation of Crimea.

MacIntosh emphasized that Russia's military actions violate the UN Charter and Ukraine's territorial integrity. She reported that Russian attacks have escalated, with over 429 missiles launched into Ukraine in July alone, more than double the previous month. Over 17,000 Ukrainian civilians, including 820 children, have been killed since February 2022, while more than 51,000 civilians, including 3,000 children, have been injured.

MacIntosh also stressed the impact of the war on global food supplies, noting that Ukraine was a significant exporter of corn, wheat, and sunflower oil before Russia's 2022 invasion. She accused Russia of using violence to consolidate control over occupied territories, citing the separation of families, forced deportation, and indoctrination of children, among other violations.

The UK envoy urged all UN member states to reject Russia's territorial claims and support Ukraine's right to defend itself under international law, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a just peace.
