Nordic-Baltic countries demand Russia’s unconditional withdrawal from Ukraine

Deputy Permanent Representative of Finland to the UN, Heli Lehto, addressed the UN General Assembly on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic states regarding Russia's actions in Ukraine. She urged Russia to promptly and completely comply with its international law obligations and demanded an immediate, full, and unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine's territory within its internationally recognized borders.

Lehto emphasized that respecting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity is vital for a fair and enduring peace. She highlighted a surge in Russian attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in 2026, with civilian casualties and injuries reaching their peak since March 2022. Residents in the temporarily occupied territories continue to endure persistent and systematic repression.

Lehto cited ongoing reports of mass arbitrary detentions, torture, sexual violence against Ukrainians in Russian custody, and the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children. She stressed that occupying authorities must guarantee humane treatment, meet basic needs, and facilitate humanitarian aid delivery. Finland's representative reiterated the eight countries' dedication to holding Russia accountable for the crimes it has committed.

"We remain firmly committed to establishing a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine and continue to provide unwavering support for the work of the International Criminal Court," Lehto stated. The diplomat represented Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, delivering this joint statement.

The European Union will never acknowledge Ukraine's occupied territories as Russian and will persist in offering extensive support to Ukraine.
