Reisen: Die Amerikaner kommen – und verändern den Tourismus auf Mallorca

Mallorca has traditionally been a destination heavily favored by Europeans, particularly Germans and Brits. However, this could soon change with the introduction of direct flights from the United States. Since 2022, United Airlines has been offering non-stop flights from New York to Palma. This has led to a noticeable increase in US tourists visiting the island.

The influx of American tourists is expected to significantly alter the holiday scene on the island. US visitors are known to spend significantly more than their European counterparts. They are more interested in experiencing the Mediterranean lifestyle, local cuisine, and wines, rather than just the sun and beach. Bartolomé Deyá Tortella, dean of the Tourism faculty at the Universitat de les Illes Balears, explains that these affluent American tourists strengthen the existing trend towards luxury on the island.

In the past year alone, according to Spain's national statistical institute INE, 300,000 US Americans visited the Balearic Islands between May and October. That's a 16% increase compared to the previous year. For the upcoming season, travel platform Mallorcard predicts that demand from the US market will grow by around 40%.
