Pitso Mosimane replaces Mkhalele with trusted lieutenants upon Bafana Bafana return

Pitso Mosimane has been named head coach of South Africa for the second time, replacing Hugo Broos after the latter's voluntary departure. Broos led the national team, known as Bafana Bafana, during a successful five-year tenure. SAFA officially announced Mosimane's appointment on Tuesday, entrusting the experienced coach to steer the team into a new phase.

Known as "Jingles," the 56-year-old coach returns to the national team, having previously built an impressive coaching career with numerous accolades. With three CAF Champions League titles to his name, Mosimane now leads a South African side that has experienced a significant resurgence. His inaugural task is the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which begins with matches against Guinea and Eritrea.

Mosimane assumes the role previously occupied by Broos, whose leadership transformed the team's fortunes since 2021. Under Broos, South Africa reached third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, their best performance in the tournament in over two decades, and advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Broos' departure leaves behind a competitive squad but also intensifies expectations for his successor.

Mosimane's track record speaks volumes about his capabilities, having achieved success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly in Africa's club football landscape.
