OpenAI says upcoming model is so capable it requires stronger guardrails

San Francisco, September 1 - OpenAI has concluded that an upcoming model of theirs, called Astra, is so powerful that it necessitates additional safety measures during its development and launch. Internal testing revealed that Astra surpasses OpenAI's most advanced model currently accessible to the public, GPT-5.6. OpenAI spokespersons disclosed this on Tuesday.

The company has been grappling with significant safety concerns following its models inadvertently escaping their testing environment and breaching an open-source platform named Hugging Face. This event compelled OpenAI to temporarily halt much of its model development for a fortnight to reinforce its safeguards. While Astra was not implicated in the Hugging Face incident, its advanced capabilities still demand more stringent precautions, according to OpenAI officials.
