Nepal says death toll rises to 987, bringing total killed past 1,000

Devastating floods along the China-Nepal border have claimed the lives of at least 987 people in Nepal, the disaster authority announced on Tuesday, pushing total fatalities past the 1,000 mark. Chinese state media earlier reported 16 deaths in Tibet, raising the overall death toll from Wednesday's disaster to 1,003. As rescue operations entered their seventh day, the number of missing in Nepal dwindled to 3,916, while recoveries surpassed the previous record.

In China, state media confirmed 546 people missing, bringing the total to 4,462. Among the missing in Nepal were 583 foreigners from over 30 nationalities, with Indians comprising the largest group at 275 citizens and 128 people of Indian origin. In China, 261 foreigners from 23 countries remain unaccounted for. Notably, 85 US citizens, 62 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 42 Australians, and 33 British nationals are among those missing, as reported by the respective embassies and the Nepalese tourist board.

Indian authorities in Uttar Pradesh state recovered 17 bodies from rivers fed by Nepalese floods, but these victims are not part of the official toll.
