Nepal flood death toll passes 1,000 as rescue efforts enter seventh day

KATHMANDU, Sept 1 — Devastating floods on the China-Nepal border have claimed at least 987 lives in Nepal, pushing the overall death toll to over 1,000, according to the disaster authority. Chinese state media earlier reported 16 fatalities in Tibet, raising the total death toll from Wednesday's disaster to 1,003. In Nepal, the number of missing persons has decreased to 3,916, while the number of bodies recovered has increased.

In China, 546 individuals remain missing, bringing the overall number of missing to 4,462. Nepal's missing include 583 foreigners from over 30 nationalities, while China's missing comprises 261 foreigners from 23 countries. Indians make up a significant portion of the missing foreigners in Nepal, with 275 citizens and 128 people of Indian origin reported missing.

There are 85 US citizens missing, according to the State Department, while 62 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 42 Australians, and 33 British citizens are also among the missing. In India, authorities in Uttar Pradesh state have recovered 17 bodies from rivers originating in Nepal, believed to be flood victims. However, these bodies are not included in the toll and are currently being identified.
