Kathmandu - The death toll from the flash flood in the Himalayas has risen above 1,000 in Nepal and Tibet. Nepal's police report 1,007 fatalities, while China initially claimed 16 victims on the Tibetan side. Many bodies are too disfigured and severely decomposed for authorities to identify. The number of dead is expected to climb in the coming days and weeks.

In Nepal, nearly 4,600 people are now missing, according to a police spokesperson. In Tibet, around 550 are still unaccounted for. Foreigners, including several Germans, remain missing in large numbers. A four-person German family was among those rescued and airlifted to safety the day after the flood. A devastating flood of water, mud, ice, and debris hit the border region last week, likely triggered by a massive glacier collapse on the Tibetan side. Many villages were completely destroyed, leaving residents with nothing.
