N. Korea downgrades diplomatic mission to London in protest of British sanctions over children's camp

On September 1, North Korea reduced the status of its diplomatic mission in London, citing Britain's sanctions against a North Korean camp accused of forcing Ukrainian children into deportation. The foreign ministry's statement labeled the British move as a "diplomatic response" to a "politically provocative" action. Ambassador Mun Myong-sin has been recalled and will be replaced by a charge d'affaires, who will temporarily lead the mission in London.

The British government, in May, added North Korea's Songdowon International Children's Camp to its sanctions list alongside Russian entities, alleging links to forced deportations and the indoctrination of Ukrainian youths. North Korea vehemently denied these accusations, calling the British move an attempt to damage its image and weaken ties with Russia.

The camp, operational since 1960, has historically been used for propaganda and regime loyalty among youth. Ukrainian news outlets have reported the abduction of at least two Ukrainian children to the camp, while in July, children from China and Russia also joined the facility, reflecting stronger relations among the three countries.
